CONSIGNMENT 101

QUALITY ALWAYS WINS

Start by buying great-quality clothing. You don’t have to pay full price, you can buy secondhand or discounted.

Unfortunately, most inexpensive, fast fashion items will end up in the landfill and have a very short, disposable lifespan.  Remember to buy great quality, not the lowest price!

Quality equals better brands made in the USA or Europe.  Small designers are the very best for slow fashion, then larger brands made locally.  If you are unsure when you are buying something, ask the salesperson for more information or do a quick internet search.

care with care

Take good care of your items and check for stains after wearing. Laundering is so important; be sure to read instructions.

BEST OF THE BEST

Keep in mind that there are billions of clothing items currently in circulation and consignment is for the very best of those items.  There is so much excess out there.

trend time

Consign new clothing within two years if on trend, unless the styles are timeless.

GIVE IT UP

Donate anything that is very worn looking, has stains or holes or is no longer desirable.  It’s okay, it had a good life, let it go. Some tailors will mend your really great items for a small fee. Then they can go back into circulation.

seasonal

Consign your seasonal items right before or at the beginning of their season for their best chance (bring in summer dresses right before summer).

Keep it clean

Be sure to launder your items before bringing them in for potential consignment.  Get rid of any perfume, pet hair, excess lint, etc. The better the item looks and smells, the better its chance at being chosen for resale.
